The Bosch Parade

There are accordion players inside the mouth.

We have now lived in the Netherlands for about 7 weeks and we have already seen a lot of interesting and amusing things.

Last Thursday we went to the small town of Den Bosch or “The Forest” - home of Hieronymus van Aken (1450-1516) who later changed his surname to Bosch. The town has one of the finest cathedrals in the Netherlands which was constructed between 1336 and 1550. There is also the Jhieronymus Bosch Art Center which contains to-scale photographic reproductions of all of his work. They are not paintings but it is great to see images of his work all in one place.

Once a year there is a Bosch Parade of about 20 floating artworks/performances/contraptions in his honor (thanks for the tip, Rusty!) This event was difficult to photograph, but here are a few of the more photogenic floats we documented from the riverbank.

A one-man-band boat.
Naked people inside, dancing to house music.
The motorized mechanism in the middle raises and drops the hammer which creates a near-deafening BANG while the men (wearing hearing protection) lounge in a hot tub made from an industrial vat. Everybody was rubbed in oil and soot.

Miscellaneous encounters:

One of the many antique trolleys that take people to the Amsterdam Forest every Sunday. The AMS Forest is similar in size to Portland's Forest Park with waaaaaay more ameneties.
Within the park there is a 2-acre 'Fun Forest' with zip lines, skill-testing elevated walks and tightropes of all kinds. There are 3 height levels and the age range is 4+. Everyone wears a harness and a helmet and clips onto a safety wire.
Maybe you thought that The Hague was only known for the UN's International Court of Justice, headquartered in the Peace Palace. Apparently it is also known for mullets! Seen at a photo exhibition in Fotomuseum Den Haag - about 50 mullets are cataloged in a 'Matlas' (mullet atlas). The photos were a touching portrait of masculinity.
Mick Jagger is here with COVID. This might be the best hotel in AMS. There are only black cars in the drop-off area.
All bread that is not an artisanal loaf is in this shape. WHY???
Girl with the Pearl Earring, Oil on Canvas (1665) and Legos on Legos (2018)

FAQ edition coming soon

Topics include art, footwear, ecological sustainability, windmills, traditional handcraft, train travel and snack food discoveries. Though art is our interest, we are reporting on a wide range of things - our only rule is it must be FUN to write and FUN to read. xo, LeBrie and Bill
